(KSL News) There was a dramatic escape overnight for a Salt Lake City man and his dog.
It happened near 600 East 5th Ave. The man smelled smoke just after midnight, opened his apartment door and could see nothing but smoke.
He dropped his dog and some valuables out his second-story window before jumping out himself.
Scott Freitag, with the Salt Lake City Fire Dept., said, "He actually jumped into the tree and kind of rolled the tree down to safety."
He suffered some scrapes and cuts from broken glass and the tree.
The fire started in the vacant apartment just below him and caused heavy damage to the entire fourplex.
