The Woods Cross Wildcats defeated the Bonneville Lakers in a close 26-24 game Friday night.
In the first quarter, with 5:36 left, the Wildcats had their first fumble recovery of the night. This moved the Wildcats up the field, close to touchdown range. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 0-0.
Three minutes into the second quarter, Woods Cross' Sean Barton scored a touchdown, bringing the score to 6-0. With a missed kick, Bonneville got the chance to do some damage but fumbled the ball with eight minutes left, and the Wildcats recovered the fumble to soon after score a second touchdown. With a good kick, the score was then 13-0 for Woods Cross.
Carson Fackrell successfully kicked a field goal for Bonneville with 31 seconds left in the half, bringing the score to 13-3.
"Tonight we played how Woods Cross football should be played," said Wildcat Bryson Rasmussen.
In the third quarter the Wildcats had a touchdown by Filipo Mokofisi and a point-after kick made by Justin Ward, and quarterback Skyler Farnes rushed 75 yards to score a touchdown, bringing the Wildcats to a score of 26 points. Bonneville also scored two touchdowns in the third, and the third quarter ended 26-18.
The Wildcats had a series of hard hits in the fourth quarter, including those of Jake Kocharhans, Bryson Rasmussen, Filipo Mokofisi, Sean Barton and Cameron Easton. After many flags were thrown and penalties were called, Bonneville scored a touchdown and went for two points to tie the game. A tackle by Woods Cross' Nicholas Castillo shut down the Lakers' chance at a tie game. The final score was 26-24, with the Wildcats on top.
The Wildcats' Cameron Easton said, "One thing we did differently during tonight's game was execution towards the end of the game, finishing when it counts. With the young team we have, going into the next week on a win was a huge boost. The way our defense played really, really played a huge role in the first half. Our defensive line really shut down the interior lanes and helped us secure the victory. Our biggest accomplishment was the offiensive line at the end of the game, putting the nail in the coffin."
"Tonight we played how Woods Cross football should be played," said Wildcat Bryson Rasmussen. "Sure, we made a few mistakes, but our team had the drive to finish the game. Our line improved so much from the last game. We [the line] worked as hard as we could and came together to do a good job. I think that's the secret. If our line can get it done up front, it will make everyone else's job easier. Hopefully, this win pushes us in the direction towards the victory train."
