MONACO (Aug. 24, 2007) -- Sam Burgess scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting to lead the BYU men's basketball team to an 86-61 victory over AS Monaco Friday night in Monaco. With the win, the Cougars complete their foreign tour of France and Monaco with a perfect 5-0 record.

With 6-foot-11 forward/center Trent Plaisted sitting out with a sprained ankle, the Cougars had their hands full down low against an AS Monaco team with good size in the post. A strong shooting night and emphasis on rebounding helped BYU compensate and overcome its first halftime deficit of the trip.

An evenly contested first quarter ended with BYU up 21-20, but AS Monaco claimed the upper hand in the second period to enter halftime up seven at 43-36. The third quarter was a hard fought battle until the Cougars seized the momentum with a 14-0 scoring burst over the final 3:30 of the period to go up by nine at 64-55. BYU kept its foot on the accelerator in the final quarter to put the game out of question, outscoring Monaco 22-6 for the 25-point final margin.

Burgess did much of the damage with an amazing 10-of-12 shooting performance, including 2-for-3 long-range bombs. Also filling up the nets with hot hands were point guard Ben Murdock and forward/center Gavin MacGregor. Murdock went 6-for-8 and scored 16 points, his high for the trip, while MacGregor came through inside going a perfect 6-for-6 to total his trip-best 12 points for the second straight game.

Jonathan Tavernari and Lee Cummard added 15 and 12 points, respectively, while Chris Miles contributed seven and Chase Ulicny two points.

The Cougars came through with solid rebounding efforts as MacGregor (7), Cummard (7), Tavernari (6), Miles (5) and Burgess (5) all worked hard on the boards. Burgess and Murdock each dished out a team-high five assists in the win.

The team is scheduled to return from its trip on Saturday.
