COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A woman with a history of DUI drove onto a sidewalk and crashed into a mailbox and retaining wall Tuesday while a young girl was in the car with her.
Kelcee Ririe, 21, drove off a residential street about 4 p.m. Tuesday near 2560 E. Portsmouth Ave. (7930 South), hitting a brick mailbox and a retaining wall before continuing along the sidewalk to a second yard where she hit another retaining wall and flower planters, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Mark Askerlund.
The woman had a 5-year-old girl in the car with her, believed to possibly be her daughter, he said. Both were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Police and paramedics detected a strong odor of alcohol on Ririe's breath, Askerlund said.
Ririe has previous DUI arrests, he said. But Askerlund believed those arrests happened when Ririe was a juvenile.
It was fortunate that school wasn't in session yet, he said, as the neighborhood where the accident happened is filled with pedestrians, including a lot of children, during the school year.
