WILLARD, Box Elder County — A second construction worker has been killed on Utah highways within a 24-hour period, the Utah Highway Patrol is reporting.

A man working on an I-15 rotomilling crew near Willard was killed after a dump truck backed over him around 9:22 p.m. Saturday. His name has yet to be released pending notification of family members, UHP spokesman Joe Dougherty said.

Another highway construction worker, Linda Potter, 54, of Castle Dale, was killed around 1 a.m. Saturday while working as a flagger on state Route 10 just south of Price. The UHP says she was killed by a drunk driver who failed to stop or slow down.

The rotomilling worker somehow ended up between the rotomill and the dump truck as the two machines were reversing after their first pass, investigators say.

In the rotomill process, as the mill grinds the road surface, it dumps the milled road pieces into a dump truck in front of it, Dougherty said. The machines were reversing to start their second pass over a bridge in the area when the man was backed over.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the incident and more information will be released when it is available.
