SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A bill drafted in response to a Utah court battle over the parental rights of a lesbian partner has passed the House.
The measure is sponsored by Representative LaVar Christensen. It stems from a pending Utah Supreme Court case on the visitation rights of two estranged women who decided to have a child together.
The bill would stop a court from awarding parental rights against the wishes of the biological or adoptive parent. It would also prohibit courts from issuing visitation, custody rights or child support payments.
Some lawmakers worry the bill would effect grandparents and/or stepparents.
