WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have determined that a woman discovered Monday morning in a residential area with a knife protruding from her neck may have committed suicide.
West Valley City Police say the body of Tomoko Maraoka, 37, was discovered around 8:30 a.m. in the road at 1465 W. Nannette Drive (2250 South), West Valley Police Lt. Dale Brophy said. It appeared she had been stabbed.
The woman's husband had reported her missing and suicidal around 3 a.m. Police initially investigated the death as a homicide, but later said there appeared to be a suicide note with the body.
"It appears at this time that the injuries may have been self-inflicted," West Valley police said in a news release, before adding that they were still considering other possibilities. "Homicide has not been ruled out at this time and will be completely investigated."
The investigation will continue until a "final determination" is made on the woman's cause of death.
