Projected starting Katback safety David Tafuna is lost for the year after suffering a foot injury in this afternoon's practice.

*******

Tafuna suffered a Lisfranc sprain to his right foot, and will require season-ending surgery. He does have a redshirt season available.

The injury is almost identical to the one suffered by quarterback Cade Cooper in the spring football game.

With Tafuna out, Corby Hodgkiss becomes the most experienced option at Katback (Hodgkiss has been the second-string Katback at practice, but Bronco has said Hodgkiss was competing with Tafuna for the starting spot). In recent practices, true freshman Jordan Pendleton has been manning Katback with the "threes," while sophomore Aaron Attig had been the third-string Katback earlier in camp, before moving over to "free." Free safety Kellen Fowler has been backing up starter Quinn Gooch, and might be considered an option to slide over to Katback, considering his level of experience.

Tafuna began camp as a projected backup safety. When painful stress reactions in both of Dustin Gabriel's feet became too much of an impediment, the first-string Katback's senior year was short-circuited with the decision to undergo season-ending surgery. Bronco was aware of Gabriel's exisiting condition, and knew there was always a possibility he might not make it into or through the season, so backup plans were already being considered before camp began. Now, Bronco and the staff go from "Option B" to "Option C."

By the way, we are hearing the word "Lisfranc" a lot more frequently these days. Former Cougar Chad Lewis suffered a Lisfranc injury while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, and current Cougar linebacker Jadon Wagner is sidelined with a less-debilitating Lisfranc sprain.
