Sam Penrod ReportingA Provo business is picking up the pieces today after someone broke in during the night and got away with several hundred dollars in cash.
The break-in happened in the heart of Provo's business district, on Center street in Provo at the Hickory Kist deli, sometime overnight. The business was able to re-open today in time for the lunch crowd.
Workers arrived to the business about 7:30 this morning to find the window in the front door had been broken and glass was everywhere. The manager called police who arrived a few minutes later and began investigating.
The only thing missing was a cash box, which had more than a day's worth of revenue from the business, which specializes in sandwiches and soups. It seems that the burglar entered through the front door but left through the back door.
James Fillmore, Owner: "It looks like they broke in the front door and they pretty much knew where they were going or what they wanted because they didn't trash the place too much. Took the cash box and went out the back."
The burglar or burglars apparently were in a hurry, leaving behind a cup full of cash for tips. They also did not bother the cash register itself.
Detectives are looking at surveillance video for any clues they can find about who may be responsible.
