LAYTON — Two Boy Scouts were hurt by a falling boulder while hiking with their troop in a canyon east of Layton.

Other boys had gone ahead of the main group. They accidentally knocked rocks loose onto the others according to Davis County sheriff deputy Scott Harper.

Emergency crews say both teens have lacerations on their heads that require sutures. One teen has a possible fracture to his shoulder and foot and will likely require surgery. Both are 13 years old.

The group of about 16 teenage boys and their adult leaders from Bountiful was about two miles up the Adams Canyon trail at the time of the incident.

"Both are doing pretty well," Harper said.

Davis County Search and Rescue teams reached the boys around 9 p.m. Some in the group hiked out, while others remained with the injured boys. They were carried off the mountain around midnight.

Family and friends were waiting to see the injured teens, who were then taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Rescuers not only dealt with steep terrain and darkness, but recent heavy rains made the going "very, very slick," Harper said. Ropes were used to relay the injured Scouts across sections of steep terrain, he added.
