WEST VALLEY CITY — One man was stabbed in the chest, another hit with a mop handle and the alleged attacker suffered a broken jaw following a wild scene at an apartment Monday night.

The incident happened at an apartment complex near 3055 West and 3500 South when a tenant went to another apartment to ask a man to turn down his stereo, said West Valley Police Sgt. Mike Powell.

The two got into a verbal argument, and eventually the tenant decided it wasn't worth it and went back to his own apartment, Powell said.

The man with the loud music, however, apparently wasn't done arguing and a short time later started pounding on the other man's door. The man's roommate opened the door and immediately found the attacker swinging a large kitchen knife, Powell said.

The roommate was stabbed in the chest and suffered a punctured lung, he said. The first man who initially tried to get the music turned down, came to help his friend and punched the neighbor in the jaw, knocking him to the ground.

Powell said the man grabbed his roommate and pulled him back inside their apartment, locked the door and called police.

During his conversation with emergency dispatchers, they asked if the alleged attacker was still outside the door. The tenant opened the door and found the attacker had grabbed a mop handle and started swinging it at him, Powell said.

The man was able to close his apartment door again until police arrived. Officers found the alleged attacker's door open. Officers said the man was intoxicated but they were able to take him into custody without incident, Powell said.

Victor Silveria, 36, was taken to a local hospital overnight to be treated for a broken jaw. He was expected to be booked into the Salt Lake County Jail after he was released.

Investigators found the knife believed to have been used in the stabbing on the roof of the apartment complex where they believe Silveria threw it.
