Utah advances to play Cal in rugby tourney

CHESTER, Pa. — Utah and California were among the eight teams that advanced out of pool play and into the quarterfinals of the USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship on Saturday.

The quarterfinals begin Sunday and conclude with the championship game the same day at PPL Park, the home stadium of the MLS franchise Philadelphia Union.

Utah overcame a 17-12 loss to Dartmouth by beating Boston College 17-5 and Notre Dame 21-17.

California was impressive in pool play, beating Ohio State 38-0, LSU 24-0 and Penn State 26-0.

Dartmouth and Penn State also advanced into the quarterfinal bracket, along with Central Washington, Army, Arizona and Texas.

The tournament, which is being televised by NBC and Versus, is in its second year.

Utah faces Cal in the quarterfinals, which will be televised Sunday at noon on Versus and at 2 p.m. on KUCW.
