BEAR RIVER CITY -- An early morning fire Saturday destroyed several hundred tons of hay bales in Box Elder County.
The fire was reported just before 7 a.m. at Bailey Farms International located in Bear River City. Nearly 700-800 tons of hay was lost in the fire.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Jensen of Box Elder County, the fire was a result of wet and moldy hay, which caused the hay to spontaneously combust. It started in one large bale of hay and quickly moved to nearby hay bales.
Fire crews from Box Elder County and Tremonton responded to the scene and were able to contain the fire as of 11 a.m.
Nearby farmers helped move 1500 tons of hay before the fire destroyed more hay. No one is reportedly hurt as a result of the fire.
Bailey Farms is an international distributor, buying and compressing high-protein alfalfa hay before selling it all around the world.
