ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Brock Reichner scored eight straight points late in the second half and Rashuan Broadus scored five of his 15 points in the final 33 seconds as Brigham Young snapped New Mexico's 21-game home winning streak with a 77-71 win Wednesday night.
BYU (13-6, 5-3 Mountain West) has ended New Mexico's three longest home winning streaks. The Cougars stopped New Mexico's all-time winning streak of 41 games with an 83-62 win on Nov. 26, 1998 and halted a 24-game win streak by the Lobos with a 96-78 victory on Jan. 25, 1975.
BYU trailed the Lobos (12-9, 3-5 MWC) by as many as 10 points in the first half but rallied by hitting seven 3-pointers in the second half and 10 in the game.
New Mexico had just one field goal in the final five minutes. New Mexico's only points over that stretch were a pair of free throws by Tony Danridge with a couple of seconds remaining.
A 3-pointer by Joel Box, his fourth of the game, gave New Mexico a 67-63 lead with 5:03 left. Reichner, who scored 11 points, then hit a 3-pointer and added a layup off a bounce pass from Broadus to put the Cougars in front (68-67) for good. The Cougars then screened Reichner clear for a wide open 3-pointer that he hit from the top of the key for a 71-67 lead with 2:33 left.
New Mexico center David Chiotti hit two free throws with 2:12 left and had a chance to tie it when BYU's Trent Plaisted picked up his fifth foul with 43.7 seconds left. Chiotti, who made just 5 of 12 free throws, missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and Broadus raced downcourt and scored on a reverse lay-up with 33 seconds remaining.
Broadus added two free throws with 21.8 seconds left after another New Mexico miss.
Box, who has quit the team twice this season only to return, had his best game of the year with a season-high 14 points and 5 rebounds while playing just 14 minutes. Danridge tied his career high with 15 points.
Mark Walters, the Lobos' leading scorer, fouled out with 5:17 remaining and finished with 8 points, ending his streak of 10 straight games in double figure scoring.
