When Johnny Depp staggeringly sashays through the various adventures of Capt. Jack Sparrow, you can just tell he's relishing every moment. It's been that way since he introduced the character back in 2003.

Now, with the release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," Sparrow is on the trail of Ponce de Leon in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth. But, he's not the only one. His old nemesis, Capt. Barbossa, again portrayed by Geoffrey Rush, is the least of his concerns considering that the most infamous pirate of them all is also in pursuit. Ian McShane stars as Blackbeard, a troubled soul concerned with his own mortality since dark forces have predicted his time might be short.

This is a much better "Pirates" movie than the last offering.

Complicating matters for everyone is the fact that Blackbeard has a gorgeous daughter (Penelope Cruz) who is no shrinking violet and apparently has quite the past with none other than Capt. Jack.

As the odyssey unfolds and the prize of eternal youth grows closer, we learn that in order for the fountain to work its magic, two very special cups must be acquired, and the tear of a mermaid is an essential ingredient. Who knew that mermaids, while stunningly beautiful, also have a real attitude and quite like the savory taste of sailors? Immortality, it seems, is easier said than done.

I have a formula for a good sequel that requires the film be able to stand on its own; familiar characters have to be further developed and new, compelling characters are introduced. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" hits all three marks.

While not as good as the original film, I still like "On Stranger Tides" a lot. I'm giving it 3 stars and it's rated PG-13.
