PAYSON — A man was killed after his car smashed into the back of a school bus full of children Thursday morning.

Just after 7:30 a.m., a school bus was making a stop to pick up a student on U-198 near 2200 West, just east of Payson Hospital.

While the bus was stopped, it was hit from behind by another vehicle, said Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson.

The 57-year-old male driver of the passenger car -- identified as David Gene Kornacki of Payson -- was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition, where he later died. The man's 17-year-old son -- Justin Kornacki -- who was riding in the car with him, suffered two broken legs and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, Johnson said.

Both men were wearing seat belts.

None of the 36 students on the bus nor the bus driver were injured.

The accident remained under investigation Thursday, but troopers said the sun's glare may have prevented the victim from seeing the bus stopped in front of him.

A co-worker who had loaned the car to David Kornacki Thursday morning said it was a terrible tragedy to all who knew him.

"His boys mean a lot and I just want people to know he was a good man and a very good father," said Maverick Giles.
