SALT LAKE CITY — Federal officials broke ground Thursday for a new FBI field office near the Salt Lake City International Airport.
The $75 million building at 5425 W. Amelia Earhart Drive will replace the current space the FBI leases in the downtown area. The multistory office will contain 163,000 square feet and is expected to be complete in the fall of 2012.
"This will be a huge improvement over what we have," said Special Agent in Charge James McTighe, who won't be around to enjoy the new building because he's retiring May 31.
The U.S. General Services Administration is touting the new structure as a "high-performing green building." The project expects to use construction materials that contain at least 30 percent recycled products. Materials extracted and manufactured within 500 miles of the site also will be used.
Construction is expected to create 500 jobs, most coming from the local community.
The Salt Lake division covers Utah, Idaho and Montana and has 19 satellite offices in those states. It employs about 160 people.
