SALT LAKE CITY -- A Kearns teen accused of shooting and killing another student in 2009 was bound over for trial Friday.
Ricky Angilau will stand trial for first-degree-felony murder. He has also been charged with obstruction of justice and carrying a concealed weapon -- both second-degree felonies -- as well as a misdemeanor count of carrying a firearm on campus.
Two teens took the stand at Friday's hearing. They testified about what happened on Jan. 21, 2009 when Esteban Saidi was killed.
They said it started as a fight between Angilau, now 18, and another student -- Erik Flores. The boys had apparently had problems as far back as junior high.
When Flores transferred to Kearns High School, he and Angilau had immediate issues. On that January day the two teens and some of their friends left school property to go to a nearby neighborhood for a fist fight.
One of Angilau's friends testified that earlier that day, Angilau showed him a gun he had brought to school. The fight lasted for no more than five minutes -- according to witness testimony.
When Flores walked away, Angilau's friend Lolo Maetele challenged him to fight as well. Not long after that, Angilau pulled out a gun and fired a shot into the air.
A group of spectators who had gathered around the fight fled when that shot was fired. Angilau fired two more shots, one of which hit Estoban Saidi -- killing him.
Maetele testified that Angilau had aimed into the air -- but when they realized someone had been hit, he and Angilau ran from the scene to a friend's house. The friend's parents encouraged them to call police and turn themselves in, which they did later that day.
