SALT LAKE CITY — A man was in stable condition Thursday after being stabbed in the abdomen.

Stabbing victim trips, falls into knife

But police say the man with the knife was not the aggressor. Rather, the intoxicated victim tripped and fell into the knife.

Just after 4 a.m., a 31-year-old man was arguing with his 60-year-old mother at their home, 338 E. Coatsville Ave. (17890 South), said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Shawn Josephson. The son then started assaulting his mother, he said.

The man's 36-year-old brother grabbed a kitchen knife and tried to break up the fight. But when the drunk man tried to hit the brother, he tripped and fell into the knife the brother was holding, Josephson said.

The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable condition. The case was still being investigated, but Josephson said as of Thursday there were no charges against the brother.
