PROVO — Investigators were trying to determine Thursday how an early morning fire inside a jewelry store started.
"We're looking at everything from a break-in to just something accidental," said Provo Deputy Fire Chief Gary Jolley. "Nothing really jumps out at us right now."
The fire at an office building, at 495 N. University Ave., was reported just before 6 a.m. by a passerby. When crews arrived there was already smoke and flames coming out of the second story windows, Jolley said.
The building was not a total loss, but damage inside, especially where the jewelry store was located, was expected to be significant.
"We're not sure yet what inventory was affected," Jolley said. "There's probably a significant amount of damage because of the value of the items in the business."
There was also an insurance business and a management agency inside the structure, he said. From 1993 to 2004, the building was home to the Utah County bureau of the Deseret News.
