ROY -- Crews will be replacing a power pole in Roy after a man crashed into it with his SUV.
Sgt. Shawn O'Malley with the Roy Police Department said the man was driving down 3500 West at 5600 South around 9 p.m. Sunday when he passed out and lost control of his SUV. It hit a fire hydrant, knocking the hydrant off of its base, then kept moving and hit the power pole.
The vehicle caught on fire, but a passerby had a fire extinguisher and helped extinguish the flames.
When rescue crews arrived they had to cut the man out of the vehicle. That's when crews noticed the power pole was starting to lean out over the road.
"It was pretty clear at that point, also by visual observation, that there was some major structural damage done to the electrical pole," O'Malley said.
Crews have braced the pole with a truck until they can replace it.
The driver was taken to a hospital with several broken bones, but he is expected to recover.
