John Daley ReportingRepresentative Chris Cannon is answering critics who are raising questions in the wake of the political scandal involving high-powered lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Cannon has not been linked to the case, but he has accepted campaign money from the lobbyist.
Congressman Cannon says he's now returning campaign money he received from the lobbyist, but he says he's done nothing wrong and is not worried he'll be ensnared in this scandal.
With a guilty plea for three felonies, including main fraud, conspiracy and tax evasion, lobbyist Jack Abramoff set off a national political scandal, which has lawmakers in both parties answering questions. One is Utah's 3rd District Representative Chris Cannon.
According to campaign disclosure reports Cannon accepted $2000 from Abramoff and $7000 from Native American tribes who were clients of Abramoff. Yesterday Cannon said he's refunding the Abramoff money.
Representative Cannon says he believes this case will and should bring attention to both ethics and campaign finance reform in Washington. He says he strongly supports that, including the immediate disclosure of campaign contributions on the internet.
