SALT LAKE CITY -- Two teams from different sports joined forces to promote heart health and women's athletics in Utah.
The Utah Blitz Women's Football League recently strapped on skates with the Salt Lake City Derby Girls to show that anyone can get up and get active. Later, the Derby Girls traveled to Kaysville to play football with the Utah Blitz.
It's part of heart health month. The goal is to develop a great relationship so that they can partner together for future fund raising and other events.
"It's an absolute sport," a participant said of the Derby Girls. "Everything you see is real. We don't pretend. It's not fake. It's not like wrestling. It's real."
"We've had broken legs, sprained ankles, a lot of stuff."
Blonde Ambition said she participates in Salt Lake City Roller Derby "to get out aggression a little bit. But mostly to make friends, have fun. It's an escape."
Another participant, Phatal Pheromone, explained, "We have a transplant surgeon on the league. We have lawyers. We have doctors. We have moms, career moms that are stay-at-home moms that get frustrated at home with what they do, so they come out here and get in shape and kick some butt."
Members of the two teams want women to know, whatever their interests, they can get out and be active.
Josey Evanoff of the Salt Lake City Derby Girls said, "They (Utah Blitz) are not very good on their skates but they can hit."
The Salt City Derby Girls league was formed in 2005 and is composed of four local teams and one all-star traveling team. It was the first all-girls flat track league formed in Utah.
The Utah Blitz Women's Football Team was formed in 2009 and participates in indoor women's football competitions. The team was started by Chrystle Kerfoot in September 2009 and has quickly expanded into a great contender.
