EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah (AP) -- Eagle Mountain residents want the benefits of growth but also want to remain rural.

During the last City Council work session of the year, pollster Dan Jones presented his analysis of an 80-question survey commissioned by the city and conducted in October. "They want to live in a rural community but they want to become large so they can have a grocery store, etceteras," he told the council. "It becomes quite a contradiction. You will lose the rural feel if you build this other stuff.

"You have to watch out for that, keep a balance. You are going to grow. My guess is that you are going to go commercial."

Jones said his interpretation leads him to believe that residents desire one thing more than anything else.

"Peace and quiet, I think that is what they want most," he said.

The survey also revealed other items of interest, including the fact that 67 percent of those surveyed said they regularly use the Internet.

"Sixty-seven percent Internet users is the highest we've ever seen," said Dianne Meppen of Dan Jones & Associates. "It means they are comfortable gathering information that way."

The survey also found that 81 percent of the respondents said they were likely to live in Eagle Mountain five years from now.

"I don't know of any city that's got a higher percentage," Jones said.

Overall, residents seem pleased with both their quality of life and the city's management, he said.

"For the most part, you've already confirmed the things that I thought," Councilwoman Linn Strouse said.
