KEARNS -- Two children are in critical condition after they were hit by an SUV in Kearns.

The accident happened Tuesday afternoon near 4700 South and 4100 West, when the 7-year-old girl and her 9-year-old brother were walking home from nearby David Gourley Elementary School.

Witnesses say the children were not using a crosswalk when they started across 4715 South.

According to police, the boy and girl crossed two lanes and made it to the middle of the road. A westbound vehicle stopped for them, but the driver of the SUV didn't see them until it was too late.

Both children were airlifted to Primary Children's Medical Center, where they are listed in critical condition.

Investigators are working to determine the speed of the SUV. They are also looking for any other factors that may have been involved.

It's unclear if the driver will face charges.
