SALT LAKE CITY -- Many faiths - one family. The motto of the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable is again about bringing people together.
The group of 45 faith leaders was formed for the 2002 Winter Olympics. It has expanded to include representatives of 22 faiths in the state of Utah. The members gathered to kick off a month of events at different houses of worship.
Gov. Gary Herbert and mayors of both Salt Lake City and county have declared February as Interfaith Month.
"I think the most important thing is take a step outside what's comfortable for you, learn about somebody else's faith. And we try to make that step beyond tolerance because you can grit your teeth and tolerate someone but learn to love what someone else loves about their faith," said Elaine Emmi, a Quaker who is serving as secretary of the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable this year. "For us, the outreach was to bring everyone to the table, and we literally have done that. And as many new people come to our valley, we have many new faiths, so every year we've grown."
