I am not a fan of Michael Moore. Let me say that right up front so you know I do not take everything he shows me as gospel or even true. To me, he is an interesting character who shows me something about my homeland that I may not have looked at otherwise. This weekend, I saw Sicko. I discounted half of what I saw as Michael Moore hyperbole and lack of balance, and the half that was left brought me to tears.

Watching Americans, particularly 9-11 rescue workers, be turned away from the hospital, left out on the street - sometimes literally - not cared for, not valued, shook my understanding of what is right. If we are judged as a people by the way we treat the weakest among us, we could do better.

And to watch the way health care is handled in England and Canada and France was so interesting. These people don't understand what it feels like to worry about a medical bill. They cannot imagine being asked about their insurance before they are treated, or worse, being turned away from the hospital because they don't have enough money. Back in 1948, with much of England in ruins from the War, they decided to take care of each other with a universal health care system - and they've taken pride in it ever since.

I do not pretend to know the answers here, but even I can see that we need to do better. Forget Michael Moore, forget Hillary's health care plan - what can you and I do better? Can you imagine how your life would be different if you didn't have to worry about being able to afford to pay your medical bills or worry about losing your insurance? How would your life be changed? Would you still be working at the same job? How would worrying about your kids change?

Thought-provoking - Sicko is that for sure. If you've seen it, I'd love to know what you thought. And if not - go see it. Try not to let Michael annoy you, and go see it - and let's work on this together.
