SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch is urging his colleagues to give Utah a fourth Congressional seat. Hatch sent a letter outlining reasons why he believes they should vote for a bill that would give Utah a fourth seat and the District of Columbia its first voting representative.
Some lawmakers are opposed to giving Utah an extra seat in Congress because the bill ties its fate with that of Washington, D.C.'s voting member. Those lawmakers say it is unconstitutional to allow Washington, D.C. a voting member in Congress.
But Hatch says Congress would be doing the right thing by passing the bill. He says people in Washington, D.C. have wrongfully been taxed without representation and that Utah should have been given a fourth seat after the 2000 Census.
