SALT LAKE CITY - Forget about hitting a high-end clothing store for your perfect holiday party outfit. It's not the prettiest, but the ugliest sweater that's becoming the most desired Christmas attire.
Every Christmas season, the Midvale Savers has a tough time keeping "ugly" sweaters in stock.
1. Wash your sweaters in lukewarm water to get rid of the Closet Stink.
2. Cold water & soda water are great stain fighters for spilled wine & buffalo chicken dip.
3. Starch your sweaters before use. A robust, crispy sweater is a good way to show seniority at your next sweater party. Show all the new sweater party newbs you're a seasoned veteran.
4. It is always a good idea to let your deodorant dry or set before putting on your sweater, to help avoid deodorant stains.
5. Spray on your perfume before putting on your sweater - perfume is strong and can weaken the fibers of your sweater. Make sure it is fully dry before putting on your sweater.
Ugly sweater parties are the new hip holiday get-together, often with contests for the most hideous. Savers manager Chris McBride does his best to keep up with demand. He even set aside a special sweater section.
"Sold through a lot of sweaters, over a hundred sweaters, just in the past week," said McBride.
Rachel Hart searched the entire thrift store but couldn't find one campy enough. So, she made her own.
"I purchased a red sweater and I found an old vintage Santa Claus face and I safety pinned it on," said Hart.
You can purchase an ugly sweater online on sites like buyuglysweaters.com. You can even get tips on how to get rid of what they call the "closet smell"
"People have more of a sense of humor about Christmas," said Hart. "And just kind of making more out of it now."
Savers receives an influx of ugly sweater donations at the start of the New Year. They then save them all for next year.
