Of all the efforts over the years to make Pioneer Park a more appealing place for the masses, nothing stands out quite like the Farmers Market, sponsored by Salt Lake's Downtown Alliance.

Since it began in 1992, the market has become one of the most popular summer events in the downtown area, attracting thousands of people each Saturday morning to the historic yet often inhospitable park.

The main draw, of course, is the fresh produce, grown by some 250 local farmers. They come from throughout the state to sell what they've grown. But a variety of other vendors are also there with prepared food and a variety of treats and household items. Then there are the local artists with their various crafts, artworks and displays that add to the atmosphere of the weekly event.

Tomorrow's market will have special significance. As it begins its 15th year, market organizers are throwing a birthday party, replete with cake, music and prizes. Should be quite an event!

KSL thanks The Downtown Alliance and all who have labored to make the Farmers Market a success. We also thank them for providing an outstanding example of what a pleasant place Pioneer Park has the potential to be, as steps are taken to make it more hospitable and appealing.
