(KSL News) -- One of the teenage boys pulled from an irrigation canal in Magna is not breathing on his own and is in critical condition tonight; the other is listed as serious.

Police say when 14-year-old Victor Gamarra, and 15-year-old Oscar Hernandez were pulled out of the water last night, neither was breathing.

Police say there is evidence at the scene the boys were drinking alcohol, and they could smell it on them. The two were saved by another teenager who noticed them underwater.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Lieutenant Brent Atkinson said, "A 14-year-old boy was walking down the canal road and saw the kids in the canal. He actually pulled them out prior to deputies and emergency personnel arriving."

Both of the boys are at the University of Utah Medical Center.
