SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Girls will be teeing off next spring in the state's first new high school sport since 1990.
The Utah High School Activities Association on Thursday voted to sanction girls golf. The sport will be divided into two classifications. Utah last sanctioned a sport in 1990, when UHSAA added softball.
"It really is time," said Scott Whittaker, executive director of the Utah PGA. "This is an exciting time for us."
The first season will be spring 2008. Whittaker thinks more girls will participate because a team will be formed specifically for them. Girls who wanted to golf in high school had to play on teams with boys.
