SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Republican U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz is being called a carpetbagger by his Democratic opponent for not living in the district he represents.

Chaffetz represents Utah's 3rd District, but lives in Alpine a few miles over the district line in Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson's 2nd District.

Third District Democratic nominee Karen Hyer said Wednesday that voters should be outraged that Chaffetz lives elsewhere. She suggested states should be allowed to require that candidates live in the districts they represent.

Chaffetz dismisses Hyer's remarks as a distraction.

He says the only time the issue comes up is during an election, when Democrats are trying to beat him.

Chaffetz is seeking a second term.
