WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Utah participant hoping to attract national attention for his parents' immigration problem was eliminated from the Scripps National Spelling Bee today.

Bee director Paige Kimble says 13-year-old Kunal Sah of Green River did not score well enough on a written test to advance to the next round. Two other Utah contestants, Helena Ma of Layton, and Erika Gritton of Orem, also failed to advance.

Kunal had hoped to do well in the bee and draw attention to the deportation of his parents, who were forced to return to India after living in Green River for 16 years. They built and ran a hotel there.

Kunal's father's visa expired and his request to stay in the country was denied.
