Social networking fans and anyone interested in a phenomenal American entrepreneurial success story will love the new movie, "The Social Network," starring Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. But if you're anticipating a glossy, warm and fuzzy 120-minute big screen experience this weekend, think again.
The tag line of the film is: "You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies." And that pretty much sets the stage.
From the initial flurry of intoxicated genius unleashed in his Harvard dorm room to refining the Facebook concept with a little help from his very few friends, Zuckermans' march to becoming the youngest billionaire in the world manages to step on a few toes.
The story swirls out of depositions that are being taken in two major lawsuits against the boy genius from his only real friend, and co-founder of Facebook, Eduardo Saverin and the Winklevoss twins.
Saverin is wormed out of the business when Zuckerman falls under the spell of Napster creator, Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake). For the Winkevoss twins, it's the claim that Zuckerman agreed to help them develop their idea for social networking, and their concepts directly inspired Facebook.
The performances are riveting and Eisenberg is mesmerizing; Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin is heartbreaking and Justin Timberlake absolutely nails his charming but oily character.
This is a must-see film and very well could deliver some serious Oscar consideration. I'm giving "The Social Network" three and a half stars and its rated PG-13.
