ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- A 20-year-old student from Dixie State College taking part in a group kayaking outing drowned in the reservoir at Sand Hollow State Park.

Oscar Juvera of Prescott Valley, Ariz., was one of 18 students who were visiting the park Friday afternoon about 15 miles east of St. George.

Park manager Laura Melling says Juvera swam about 200 yards from shore toward an island before he disappeared under the water.

A school official with the group dove into the water and pulled him to the surface. Rescuers performed CPR before he was transported to Dixie Regional Hospital, where was pronounced dead at about 8:45 p.m.

Dixie State President Stephen Nadauld says the school extends its deepest sympathies to Juvera's family and friends.
