LEHI -- Gallons of diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid spilled into an irrigation creek in Utah County Friday afternoon. The water from the creek eventually feeds into Utah Lake.
The spill happened at Mill Pond. A rental company was picking up an excavator, which tipped off the trailer and onto its side. Workers immediately called for help.
"The crews were actually training hazmat earlier and were able to grab the pads and the pits and get down here," said Lehi Fire Battalion Chief Rick Howard.
Lehi firefighters said the booms and pads could be left in the creek for several months, but they're confident they contained the chemicals to a 2-acre stretch. They said traces won't show up in Utah Lake.
