PAYSON -- A former Payson councilman is accused of pretending to be a police officer.

The Deseret News reports Robert Brent Burdick, 60, was charged in August with one count of impersonating a peace officer.

Police say Burdick called emergency dispatch in July, trying to get information about a traffic accident. When the dispatcher refused to give the information, police say Burdick claimed he was a police officer.

When the dispatcher asked for his badge number, he hung up.

Burdick, who served on the city council from 2004 to 2008, says it's just a misunderstanding.
