SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Jeff Cunningham converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute and Chris Brown scored the tying goal in stoppage time to help Real Salt Lake salvage a 3-3 draw with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.
Former RSL captain Jason Kreis made his coaching debut for Real Salt Lake (0-2-3). The team fired John Ellinger and replaced him with Kreis, who accepted the head coaching position Thursday.
New York's Clint Mathis scored two goals and assisted on another against his former team.
The Red Bulls (3-0-2) scored twice in the first half, one from Mathis and another from midfielder Dan Richards.
Chris Klein pulled RSL to within 2-1 with a 20-footer from the right side in the 61st minute. It was his first goal of the season.
Mathis headed in his third of the year in the 83rd minute on a crossing ball.
But after Atiba Harris was brought down in the box, Cunningham cut the lead to 3-2. Then Brown, a substitute, dribbled his way through the defense for the equalizer.
