OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Winter 2008 will bring some 300 athletes to the Snowbasin Ski Resort for the first Xterra Winter World Championships.

The televised games are scheduled for March 8-9.

The championships feature a new multi-sport event combining cross-country skiing, mountain biking, running and snowshoeing.

The Greater Ogden Athletic Legacy Foundation worked to bring the games to the region.

Over the next few years, the Utah Sports Commission will provide $350,000 annually to the winter event and its summertime companion, the Mountain Championship.

The summer event mixes swimming, mountain biking and trail running. It's planned for Aug. 17-19 at Weber County's Pineview Reservoir and Snowbasin.

Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey says the televised events will secure the region's position as an outdoor recreation destination for tourists.
