(KSL News) A preliminary hearing is scheduled today for the man charged with transporting illegal immigrants.

Prosecutors say on April 16 Rigoberto Salas-Lopez was driving with more than 14 illegal immigrants in an SUV when he lost control of the vehicle and it rolled on U.S. 191 just before dawn.

Eight of those immigrants died in the wreck.

Salas-Lopez was found hiding in the Four Corners area desert after the crash and was arrested. He told police he had swerved to miss striking an animal in the road. Others say he was fondling one of the female passengers.

The incident launched a federal investigation into a human smuggling operation.
