(KSL News) A popular elementary school teacher is formally charged with sexually abusing several students.
Third-grade teacher Christopher Burton is accused of touching students at East Elementary in Tooele.
Chris Burton is in jail, on $200,000 cash bail. Burton taught at East Elementary for 3 years.
The charging documents allege Burton would put children on his lap and then put his hands in their pockets to touch them inappropriately.
All of the incidents allegedly happened between August 2006 and March 2007.
The Tooele County Attorney said some of the victims were abused more than once. It's unknown whether they were a mix of boys and girls or all of one gender.
Prosecutors say they have more interviews scheduled, with possible other victims and witnesses.
Burton's attorney says he is innocent. He will be back in court next week.
If convicted, Burton could spend the rest of his life in prison.
