"Hopefully he'll come to Night Flight Comics. We have an extra cap for him when he's in town," she said.

Comic book stores say events like this always create a renewed interest from comic book readers young and old.

"I think the reason it creates so much excitement is that it makes him seem more human," Cruz said. "It puts him in touch with us and who we are."

Superman comics date back to 1938 -- which makes for a lot of flying around to save the day -- and Cruz said the superhero still has it.

"He absolutely does have cache," she said.

The deadline for the essay contest is July 12.
