Alex Cabrero ReportingA mother who got into a fight with her 16-year-old daughter is now in jail for child abuse and attempted homicide.

A police report states the mother hit her daughter with a ruler and then tried smothering her with a pillow.

West Valley police say the teen is doing OK, at least physically. West Valley Police Captain Tom McLachlan says, "This could've been a real tragedy."

McLachlan says Martin and her 16-year-old daughter began fighting at their home Tuesday evening. It got so bad, Martin hit her daughter with a metal ruler, then for some unexplainable reason tried smothering her with a pillow.

McLachlan says the fight was over house cleaning chores.

When Martin realized she was supposed to be at a meeting, she left. Her daughter then called her brother, who took her to police. McLachlan said, "It was important that the daughter bring it to our attention so we can have some resolution here."

He also said, "Each family, we all have our tensions and our frictions and stuff, but it's just a tragic deal."

Martin is still at the Salt Lake County jail. Her charges deal with child abuse and attempted homicide.
