PROVO, Utah (AP) -- The open burning period in Utah County is now underway for yard cleanup.

The designated 30-day burn period started on Saturday. Officials say more than 300 controlled burns took place in the county on that day.

The Utah County Fire Marshall set the burn period. Now through May 14, residents can obtain permits from their local city offices to burn yard waste. They can also get permits by calling 374-BURN.

Officials say every city specifies what types of materials residents are allowed to burn.
