PROVO -- Police say officers shot and killed a man inside a Provo grocery store Saturday.
Police say the man got into a fight with store security at the Smith's near 200 North and Freedom Boulevard just before 9 p.m. Provo police officers were called in to assist with the situation.
There was like eight gunshots so everybody hit the floor. I was just behind the magazine rack trying to stay down. I didn't know where my grandson was or anything so I was freaking out.
–Shelly Thomas
Police say when the officers arrived, the suspect pulled out a gun. That's when officers shot him.
The suspect died at the scene.
Witnesses who were inside the store tell KSL they heard anywhere from eight to 10 gunshots.
"I was in the checkout lane and I saw a bunch of people at the back of the customer service desk to that back room or wherever and the lady at the customer service desk said, ‘Get down! Get down!' and so everybody was just kind of standing there like, ‘What's going on?'" said witness Shelly Thomas. "There was like eight gunshots so everybody hit the floor. I was just behind the magazine rack trying to stay down. I didn't know where my grandson was or anything so I was freaking out."
Police have not released the name of the suspect and are still investigating.
