I spent most of the day at Primary Children's Medical Center getting updates as Maliyah and her mom Erin were in surgery for the kidney transplant. The PR staff gave the media a room to set up cameras, computers and audio equipment, and doctors and family members frequently came in to give updates. There was a pool photographer for still pictures and one for video, dressed in hospital scrubs. When they would bring pictures in we would crowd around to see them uploaded. The one that touched me the most was the shot of Erin being wheeled to her operating room, and when she passed her daughter's OR the surgeons opened the door for her to peek in at her daughter. What a labor of love for this mom to donate a piece of herself so her daughter could have a better life. What a great life is hopefully now ahead for Maliyah, since her doctors say the surgery was successful.
