SALT LAKE CITY -- Leaders, residents and businesses across the state are gearing up to raise awareness of the importance of water conservation in Utah.

The week of May 1 through May 9 is Water Week. Salt Lake County Deputy Mayor Nichole Dunn kicked off the event in City Creek Park Sunday at the intersection of State Street and North Temple in Salt Lake City.

City Creek was the first water supply for the community and still serves as a vital resource.

State and city leaders have planned a series of events and activities to encourage Utahns to protect one of our most valuable resources.

"Our state is one of the driest in the nation and our per-capita use is one of the highest in the nation," said David Everitt, Salt Lake City chief of staff. "That's math that won't eventually add up."

Some of the events include a water scavenger hunt at Hogle Zoo, the premiere of a documentary about bottled water and a plant sale.
