(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Ed and Lois Smart say March 12 shouldn't focus on Elizabeth, but instead on helping other children. Today marks one-year that Elizabeth was returned home safely after being kidnapped for nine-months.
Elizabeth's father Ed Smart says she's a normal 16-year-old who enjoys talking on the phone with her friends, driving, and who just went to the prom.
Ed Smart says it's a miracle that Elizabeth has continued in her life from where she left off. He says she only occasionally mentions events that happened during her abduction.
The Smarts will mark March 12 by working with the Utah Girl Scouts to launch an initiative encouraging a statewide focus on child safety.
Brian David Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee are charged with Elizabeth's kidnapping and still await trial.
