SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has signed a bill into law that requires suspects arrested for a violent felony to provide a DNA sample.
Senate Bill 277 requires a county sheriff to collect a swab of DNA if the suspect's specimen is not already on file.
It also makes suspects pay $150 for the costs of collecting the specimen if they are convicted.
The sample couldn't be processed until a trial is set or a grand jury issues an indictment.
It would have to be destroyed if criminal charges aren't filed within 90 days after booking.
Herbert signed the bill Wednesday.
